I was at home one day with my wife and friend dropped by for a visit. She knew I had been working with these Personal Development Interviews and she asked, “Tell me about this management stuff you’re doing.”

She’s retired from a large aerospace firm that does performance reviews so I asked, “You did performance reviews at ****** right?”

She rolled her eyes and said, “Yes.”

I asked, “What did you think of them?”

She reply, “They sucked!”

When I ask people about performance reviews, that's a pretty normal response.

I speak to a lot of groups and I often ask how many of the people in the room have been on the giving or receiving end of a performance review.  Most of the people in the room raise their hand.  Then I ask, “How many of you like performance reviews, think they are motivating, and lead to the results that the organization wants?"  Once in a while a hand or two will go up, but most often no one raises their hand.

Personal Development Interviews (PDI's) are the alternative to Performance Reviews. Not only do both the giver and receiver of PDIs like them, they both leave motivated, and PDIs lead to the results that the organization wants.

Going back to my conversation with Mary - I told her a little about PDI's and said, “Just listening to what they’re called, a Performance Review, or a Personal Development Interview; which would you rather have?”

Her reply, “A Personal Development Interview.”

I think you'll agree that a business or organization is much better off when it chooses to develop team members as opposed to simply reviewing them.

PDI's not only improve communications, reduce turnover, improve productivity and morale, and lead to better overall company health, they also create a learning organization. This is one of the most impressive features of the PDI. It empowers your team members to efficiently and energetically accomplish short term and long term goals.

"I can't tell you how good it feels to look forward to meeting with my supervisor for my Personal Development Interview as opposed to dreading a boring - or even humiliating - performance review. Knowing that my manager wants me to succeed and be an integral part of this company motivates me to put my best foot forward. A regular PDI keeps me on track with my goals, and it helps me to see the big picture. I feel like I am truly a part of a team and that I am being developed as a person and as a team member. I highly recommend this system of performance management over any other that I have encountered."-
